Parenting tips for becoming an active family

Modeling a healthy, active lifestyle will encourage your child to value physical activity and establish habits to see them through life.

Here are five tips for becoming an active family.

  1. Role Model: Let your child see you leading and enjoying an active lifestyle.
  2. Monitoring: Keep a check on all the every day opportunities to be active as a family, taking the stairs, parking further away from the shops, walking the last 10 minutes to school. It all adds up.
  3. Setting Boundaries: Set a family rule that some of after school time is outdoor play time.
  4. Encouraging to desirable behavior: Make time to be active as a family or watch and praise your child as they play. This is just as important when they play in the backyard as it is when they are on the sports field.
  5. Managing resistance: Encourage your child to try different sports, games or ways to be active. they may need to try a range of activities before they find something they enjoy.
